BDSM is a huge umbrella term for practically anything kinky. The acronym breaks down something like this:

B: Bondage- tying people up with rope, leather or steel. Also can be used mentally by just telling your partner not to move.

D: Discipline- from corporal punishment to actual mental and physical control of your behaviors much like a military person has discipline.

D: Dominance- the top partner, the person giving the physical play and lead relationship role

S: Submission- the bottom partner, the person receiving the physical play and subservient to the top role

S: Sadism- consensual giving of pain to a masochist partner for pleasure. (This is not the same as criminal sadism- where the bottom partner can not stop what’s happening)

M: Masochism- consensual receiving of pain from a sadist partner for pleasure.

Consensual BDSM is all about negotiation, talking about limits and communication. Nothing is done to each other without agreeing to it first. This is the paramount rule that will come up very frequently today while I talk about abuse in kinky relationships.

Play session or scene is an activity where the two people involved give and receive pain and pleasure. It’s similar to when you have sex only sex may not be involved in the play that the two partners engage in.

Being kinky can be anything from just play acting in the bedroom to public play to a full time relationship where the partners embrace their roles in and out of the bedroom.
