Day 15
The Mmm-Mmm Game
My Christmas’ as a child were filled with odd traditions and games my mom would play around the holidays. One of them was the Mmm-mmm game. Mom would wrap presents as soon as she bought them so that no one could discover them unwrapped and ruin it for themselves or another. So, presents began sitting under the tree from the time it went up until Christmas morning.
In all of our childhood curiosity we would always ask Mom what was in this present or that present. She would smile, sometimes pick it up if she forgot what it was and then mm-mm-mm out the syllables for what was in it. So for example if she had wrapped a set of legos she would say, “Mmm-mmm’s”, or if it were a bicycle then she would murmur, “Mmm-mmm-mmm.” We would have so much fun guessing what the mm-mm’s meant that we forgot for awhile how long it was till we could discover what they really meant.
There was one very memorable year when I asked my mom what was in a Christmas envelope, because she never gave us money directly and I couldn’t for the life of me figure out what it was. I was 14 which would put it 1992. She hummed, “Mm-mm-mm-mm-mm-mm-mm-mm-mm-mm.” I had no idea! It baffled me for 2 weeks.
On Christmas day, the mm-mm’s became concert tickets for New Kids on the Block. I nearly jumped out of my skin. They were in posters all over my room, on my bedsheets, school folders, I had all the collector’s cards at the time and all of their tapes and now I was going to see them live. Best gift EVER!
